Qantas Airways has announced it will trial an end-to-end facial recognition security system for passengers departing from Sydney Airport, beginning with automated check-in, bag drop, lounge access and boarding, Passenger Terminal Today reports.
The system will be available to passengers on select international flights on a voluntary basis, and Qantas has proposed to expand it to mobile check-in and automated border processing in the future.
“One of our core commitments at Qantas is to make travel as attractive, convenient and enjoyable as possible. There is an increasing need for airlines and airports to offer faster and more convenient airport experiences and we’re excited to see what results the trial produces,” said Qantas Chief Customer Officer Vanessa Hudson. “Qantas customers will not only be able to check in for their flight using the technology, it is also available for our lounge staff who can create a more personalized experience when passengers arrive.”
Geoff Culbert, CEO, Sydney Airport, said, “In future, there will be no more juggling passports and bags at check-in and digging through pockets or smartphones to show your boarding pass – your face will be your passport and your boarding pass at every step of the process.”

Biometrics are expected to contribute significantly to growth in airport IT spending to $4.63 billion by 2023, according to a recent report from Frost & Sullivan. SITA Director of Government Markets and Secure Journeys Working Group founding member David Menzel recently told Biometric Update that after numerous trials, airport biometrics may be reaching a turning point with increased investment.
