Do you know how a fingerprint scanner works?

Author: huifan   Time: 2019-12-09

Fingerprint scanners are security systems of biometrics. They are now used in police stations, security industries and most recently, on computers.

Everyone has marks on their fingers. They can not be removed or changed. These marks have a pattern and this pattern is called the fingerprint. Because there are countless combinations, fingerprints have become an ideal means of identification.

How a fingerprint scanner works

There are many different ways for fingerprint scanners to read fingerprints. The basic principle of capacitive sensing technology is that it transmits fingerprint images based on the changes in electrical resistance on the surface of a living finger-please note the word "living". The cells of the epidermal layer of the skin, including the fingers, are non-living. The first layer of living skin cells can be seen by peeling off the epidermal layer of non-living cells. These skin cells have a certain amount of electrical resistance. They also form specific shapes on the surface of the skin—common fingerprint lines and grooves. The combination of specific electrical qualities in the cell and the way the cells are arranged enables the resistance of the skin surface to be measured with unique changes.

This is how the capacitive reader works-it first reads the changes in the electrical resistance of the finger's living skin, and then conducts a finger image showing those changes. The image looks like a standard fingerprint image displayed by police. The resistance change diagram is called a fingerprint image. After the fingerprint image is generated, it is saved or compared with another fingerprint image to determine if they are the same. Capacitive sensor technology occupies a dominant position in the fingerprint industry; all other fingerprint recognition technologies are technology followers. This technology is also very mature, stable and reliable, and it is one of the relatively cheapest fingerprint sensing technologies in the market today.

Advantages of a fingerprint scanner

1. Complexity

Unlike the large number of passwords required to access computers, web sites, and company applications, fingerprints are not forgotten, misplaced, or shared.

2. Security

Today, computers often store sensitive and confidential data. They are also access points to the corporate network. As systems become smaller and more mobile, their risk of loss or theft increases. The use of fingerprint readers in combination with passwords provides a higher level of authentication security when accessing data or networks than security implemented with only one form of authentication.
